A member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Brong Ahafo regional communication team, Alhaji Katongo has said, the emergenge of vigilante groups in Ghana is as a result of some pronouncement made by President Akuffo Addo and Sammy Awuku prio to the 2016 general elections.

Katongo explained that, President Akuffo Addo then in opposition “all die be die” comments prompted some people to use every means to protect themselves .
He recalled how Sammy Awuku now Organizer of the New Patiotic Party (NPP) incited the youth of his party to carry along short pestle in their bags as a means of defending themselves from attacks.

The outspoken Communicator from Berekum East Constituency who was speaking on dinpa fm’s anopa bosuo show hosted by Akua Nyarko Abronoma quoted Sammy Awuku as ”We can’t buy you pistol or guns because its expensive but for pestle everybody can afford it. Get some in your bags wherever you go so that when you are attacked ,you can defend yourselves with it”.

”During the 2016 general elections, whenever you meet a member of the NPP you see the person carrying a bag, it doesn’t contain books but rather that short pestle commanded by then Youth Organizer Sammy Awuku”.

He added that, at the time the NDC were condemning such comments, the NPP Supporters were hailing them. So the youth in NDC also decided to form groups aim at retaliating any attack on them from the NPP .
And this is what we are witnessing today,he said.

Alhaji Katongo was reacting to attack on some Northern Regional Executives of the NDC by pro- NDC vigilante group known as the Al-queda last Friday.
