Some residents of Krofrom and Tafo Nhyieaso in the Manhyia North and Old Tafo municipalities of the Ashanti Region have threatened to demonstrate against the Nana Afia Kobi Ampem Nursing Training College (NTC) over the school’s unsanitary conditions.
The residents complained that the authorities of the college discharge human excreta into open drains, which is having dire implications on their health and social well-being.
A resident of Tafo Nhyieso, Nana Dwira Manu told newsmen that several attempts made at the Municipal Sanitation Department to curb the trend, have not yielded any positive results.
According to Nana Dwira, the proprietor of the college, Mr Owusu King, has failed to address the unsanitary issues of the NTC, particularly the way it disposes human excreta into open gutters.
He, therefore, appealed to the government, including the MCE and the Member of Parliament for the area, to intervene in the matter within a week, or the residents would demonstrate to drum home their concerns.
On Monday, 22 October 2018, a task force and community police personnel stormed the college to enforce a summons by the Tafo Municipal Assembly (TMA). The trainees put up a resistance, which resulted in a melee that got one student injured.
