Commercial drivers at the Sunyani main taxi station in the Brong Ahafo Region, on Monday October 1 2018, demonstrated against the Ghana Private Road Transport Union(GPRTU) and the Authorites of the Assembly over the numerous potholes which have taken over the station causing passengers to board taxis by the roadside whenever it rains.
Speaking to the driver union chairman, Mike a.k.a Asaasewura, he said, the issue of potholes is a major headache to the drivers with calls for improvement proving futile.
He further said their demonstration is to press home the need for urgent action to resolve the matter.
He again lamented that the Assembly claims they have given the contract out to a company, but in over a year, no work has started.
Asaasewura said since GPRTU is under the Assembly, they expected to be awarded the contract but they lost it through a toss.
He noted that the drivers have given the Assembly a one-week ultimatum to fulfil it’s promise of fixing the roads failure of which will compel them to demonstrate again.
Meanwhile ,speaking on dinpa anopa bosuo show, the Public Relations Officer(PRO) for the Sunyani Municipal Assembly Edwin Kofi Dartey said the contract has been awarded and the contractor will begin work as soon as the rainy season is over.
He however assured the drivers of a temporal solution.
“We have made provision for chippings to be used to fill the potholes whiles we wait for rains to stop”, he added .
